Lime, (European) Tilia vulgaris

Description:

A uniform white or pale yellow coloration overall, which can darken in time. Sapwood not obviously distinguishable from the heartwood. Straight grained with a generally fine texture.

Working properties:

An easy timber to work but can pluck easily so sharp edges are required for the best finish. Turns and carves extremely well.

Physical properties:

Moderately heavy with medium moisture movement. Does not bend easily but can be used for moderate curves.

Durability:

Non-durable but is permeable and takes treatment easily. Sapwood liable to attack from the common furniture beetle.

Turning and carving.
