Description:

The sapwood is narrow and white in colour and the heartwood is reddish brown. Generally straight grained and somewhat course textured exhibiting a fairly prominent growth ring figure. Can contain large knots and its distinctive, punchy odour separate it from the Western Red counterpart.

Working properties:

An easy timber to work but with little effect on the sharpness of cutting tools. Knots and bark pockets can be troublesome.

Physical properties:

Soft and brittle wood that dries easily with a small tendency to warp. Bends well but lacks shock resistance.

Durability:

A durable timber that takes treatment easily.

Main uses:

Cabinet making and joinery. Has also been used in fencing and garden furniture, depending on grade.
